Gold foil, gesso and God's play
Mysore Traditional Painting are off-shoots of the Vijayanagara school of painting that flourished under the patronage of the Wodeyar rulers of Mysore, during the 16th and 17th centuries. Inspired by the region’s rich devotional and cultural traditions, these paintings bring to life Hindu deities, mythological stories and sacred narratives through graceful forms, delicate lines and intricate ornamentation. The distinctive use of gesso relief and gold foil adds a warm, luminous quality to each composition.
With a legacy spanning over 300 years, Ganjifa cards were cherished by Krishnaraja Wodeyar III of Mysuru, a skilled player himself. Often called "God's play," the game is played with cards featuring divine images, each surrounded by exquisite craftsmanship. Artisans continue to handcraft and paint each card by hand, celebrated for miniature detail, natural colours, low-relief artistry and unique brush strokes.
