Lacquerware in Karnataka traces its roots back to the early centuries, finding its true home in Channapatna—a small town in the Ramnagara district near Bengaluru. Here, Hale Mara (Ivory wood) is carefully seasoned for months before being shaped on a lathe into elegant forms. As the wood spins, slender sticks of coloured lac are pressed against it. The heat from friction melts the lac, allowing the vibrant colour to spread evenly across the surface. A final polish with a palm leaf imparts the piece with its signature glossy sheen.
